NO MAJOR UPSETS IN FIRST MATCH PLAY ROUND

The first match play round of the 127th Sri Lanka Amateur Golf Championship commenced at the picturesque Nuwara Eliya Golf Course where the top 32 golfers made the cut at 172 or better.

As expected 18 year old Nattawat Suvajanakorn from Thailand making his maiden appearance in the short but tight course 6000 feet above sea level won comfortably against 23 year old Husni Uwise by 6/5.

There were a few upsets , The more fancied D.M. Pradeep from the Sri Lanka Navy fell to Bangladeshi Ismail. '\

Later  Navy was rescued by G. Sridaran seeded at 25 when he beat 8th seed G.M. Pradeep Kumar a1 up at the 18th.

Kandy produced a surprize package by the name of Sasinathan who sent seasoned veteran B.A. Rohana into early retirement.

There were some closely fought battles as expected between Chalitha Pushpika and Danusha Perera with Chalitha coming back to the clubhouse victorious at the 19th from a sudden death play-off being all square after 18 holes.

Pakistan’s Salman Jehangir seeded 11 was made to sweat even in the cool weather by Sri Lanka’s Sisira Kumara seeded 22 and taken all the way to the 17th hole before winning by 2/1.

All other top seeds won their card fairly easily to play tomorrow.

Ladies

The Ladies match play saw the evergreen Suwen Selvaratnam being stretched by last year’s runner-up young Rasika Ekanayake to the first sudden death hole showing that experience more often can win over youth.

Michelle Mirchandani showed the spirit and toughness in her blood as Doc. Thurai’s daughter by cleaning up her younger and less experienced opponent Kishani Vethavinayakam by 4/2 to earn the right to take on the top seed Tvesa Malik from India who earned a rest day due to her not having any opponent today.

Astha Madan too had an easy day finishing off her opponent Sandiya Kumari from India at the 13th hole 6/5.

Expect to read bit more excitement and drama tomorrow.
